Space Mission Facts and Information


Space travel and exploration has been carried out for many years and continues to evolve with the aid of human space fight, robotic probes and telescopes. We continue to explore the universe and maybe someday we will find other life in it but to date Earth is the only planet known to be habitable enough to support life. There has been many missions into space these are just a few of them.

Facts about Space Missions

  • The first man-made object to orbit the earth was Sputnik 1 on the 4th of October 1957 followed by Sputnik 2 on the 3rd of November 1957 which orbited for 7 days carrying a dog called Laika. These were launched by the U.S.S.R
  • Explorer 1 was the first U.S satellite to orbit earth on 31st of January 1958
  • The first satellite to orbit the moon was Luna 1 which was launched on the 2nd January 1959 by the U.S.S.R
  • Luna 2 was the first man-made object to impact the moon surface in 1959
  • Yuri A. Gargarin was the first man in space and orbited the earth once on the 12th of April 1961 in Vostok 1
  • On the 5th of May 1961 Alan B. Shepard.Jr became the first man from the U.S to enter space in Mercury Freedom 7 for a suborbital flight
  • The first woman in space was Valentia Tereshkova on the 16th of June 1963 in Vostok 6
  • Alexei A. Leonov was the first to do a space walk on the 18th of march 1965 from Voskhod 2. It lasted 12 minutes
  • Edward White was the first from the U.S to do a space walk on the 3rd of June 1965 from Gemini 4. His lasted 22 minutes
  • On the 4th of December 1965 Gemini 7 is launched and orbits the earth 206 time proving a trip to the moon is possible
  • The first spacecraft to manage a soft landing on the moon was Soviet Luna 9 on the 3rd of February 1966
  • Surveyor 1 was the first spacecraft from the U.S to achieve a soft landing on the moon on 2nd of June 1966
  • The first spaceflight fatality was on the 24th of April 1967 when Soviet Soyuz 1 crashed carrying Vladimir M. Komarov
  • On 20th of July 1969 Apollo 11 make the first manned soft landing on the moon with Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, Jr. They also do the first moonwalk
  • Pioneer 10 was the first man-made object to travel through the asteroid belt on the 15th of July 1972
